Expert advice on booking a live band for your wedding

We’re really chuffed to have been called upon by Your South Wales Wedding magazine to provide some expert advice on booking live entertainment for your wedding. The magazine (which is available to buy now!) got in touch and asked Andy, our band leader, for his “Top 5 Tips” when booking a live band. He sent them 6 tips! Here’s what he said:

Think about style

It could be anything from ceilidh dancing to rat-pack music, jazz, soul, pop or indie; think about the kind of music that will suit your big day.

Consider your guests’ tastes

Of course it needs to be the perfect band for you, but you’ll only know you have made the right choice when all your guests are up on their feet dancing. There’s nothing quite like a good boogie at a wedding.

Get recommendations

Ask friends, family, colleagues and even your wedding venue for their suggestions. If you are unable to find first-hand reviews, take a look at the band’s website and look for up-to-date testimonials.

Check the band’s credentials

The band should have adequate public liability insurance and Portable Applicance Tested (PAT) equipment. Most venues won’t let a band perform without them.

Ask these questions (and make sure you’re satisfied with the answers!)

  • What happens if a band member falls ill? Will the band have a fully rehearsed professional standing by to take their place?
  • Will the band be playing music between sets, or should you book a DJ too?
  • How log will it take the group to set up/tear down? Does it matter if the guests are in the room?
  • Has the band had any experience at your chosen venue?
  • What are the full terms and conditions of booking?
  • Will the company be providing a contract?

These, particularly the last question, are all things  you should know before you book.

Get in early!

If you have your heart set on a particular group, go ahead and book them right away. There’s nothing worse than trying to confirm a date, and somebody else has beaten you to it. This happens often, but it can be avoided if you book as early as possible.

The secret to fabulous reception music is to make sure it fits with the overall theme of your day. Although a DJ will offer great versatility, a live party band cannot be beaten! Try to find one that plays a mix of music and caters for a wide age-range, that way there is sure to be something throughout the night to please everyone.

Classic Soul Dogs are a young, vibrant and seriously funky band with a huge repertoire of soul, funk and disco classics. The set list includes everything from Aretha Franklin to Stevie Wonder and lots more in between!
